A refrigerator runs 24 hours a day, and in Qatar’s heat its compressor works harder than in cooler climates. Catching problems early protects your food and often turns an expensive compressor replacement into a simpler repair. Watch for these five warning signs.
1. Food is not staying cold
If milk spoils early or the fridge feels cool rather than cold, check the temperature setting first. The fridge compartment should sit around 3–5°C and the freezer around -18°C. If settings are correct but temperatures keep rising, the cause may be a failing thermostat, a blocked air vent between freezer and fridge, a faulty fan or a refrigerant problem.
2. Excessive frost or ice build-up
A thin layer of frost is normal in some models, but thick ice on the back wall or around the freezer usually points to a defrost system fault: the defrost heater, timer or sensor. Ice can also form when the door seal is damaged and lets warm, humid air inside.
Quick check: close the door on a sheet of paper. If it slides out easily, the gasket may need cleaning or replacement.
3. Clicking, buzzing or unusually loud noises
Repeated clicking when the compressor tries to start often means a faulty start relay or overload protector. Loud buzzing or rattling may come from a failing condenser or evaporator fan. These parts are much cheaper to replace than the compressor, so do not ignore the noise.
4. The back or sides feel very hot
Some warmth is normal because the fridge releases heat through its condenser. However, excessive heat, or a compressor that runs constantly without switching off, can mean dusty condenser coils, poor ventilation or an overworked compressor. Leave several centimetres of space around the fridge and keep the area behind it free of dust.
5. Water leaking on the floor
Water under the fridge is usually caused by a blocked defrost drain, a cracked drain pan or a leaking water line on models with ice makers. Left alone, it can damage flooring and cabinets.
Simple maintenance that extends fridge life
- Vacuum the condenser coils every few months.
- Keep door seals clean and check them for tears.
- Avoid overloading shelves so cold air can circulate.
- Let hot food cool before placing it inside.
- Keep the fridge away from direct sunlight and ovens.
