When outdoor temperatures in Doha climb above 45°C, an air conditioner that only produces lukewarm air quickly becomes an emergency. Split and ducted systems in Qatar run almost non-stop for months, so dust, humidity and wear build up faster than in most countries. Here are the most common reasons an AC stops cooling properly, and what to do about each.
1. Clogged air filters
Dirty filters are the number one cause of weak cooling. Dust and sand restrict airflow, so the unit works harder while cooling the room less. Open the front panel of the indoor unit, slide out the mesh filters, rinse them with lukewarm water, let them dry fully and refit. In Qatar, cleaning filters every two to four weeks during summer makes a noticeable difference.
2. Dirty outdoor condenser coil
The outdoor unit releases heat from your home. When its coil is coated in dust, it cannot shed heat efficiently, especially in peak afternoon temperatures. A professional coil wash with the correct cleaner restores heat transfer and can lower running costs.
3. Low refrigerant (gas leak)
Air conditioners do not “use up” refrigerant. If gas is low, there is a leak somewhere. Typical signs include:
- Ice forming on the indoor coil or copper pipes
- A hissing or bubbling sound
- Cooling that slowly gets weaker over weeks
Simply topping up the gas without fixing the leak only delays the problem. A proper repair includes leak detection, a pressure test, sealing the leak and recharging with the correct refrigerant (such as R410A or R22) to the manufacturer’s specification.
4. Failing capacitor or fan motor
If the outdoor fan is not spinning, or the compressor hums but does not start, a worn start/run capacitor or fan motor is a likely cause. Capacitors age quickly in extreme heat. This repair involves live electrical components and should only be handled by a trained technician.
5. Blocked condensate drain
High humidity means split units produce a lot of water. If the drain line blocks, water may drip from the indoor unit and some systems shut down cooling as a safety measure.
6. Wrong settings or thermostat issues
- Check the remote is set to Cool mode, not Fan or Dry.
- Set the temperature lower than the current room temperature.
- Replace the remote batteries and confirm the display responds.
Quick checklist before you call
- Clean the indoor filters.
- Make sure nothing blocks the outdoor unit and that its fan is spinning.
- Check the breaker has not tripped.
- Close windows and doors in the room being cooled.
If cooling is still weak after these steps, the fault is likely mechanical, electrical or refrigerant-related.
